The Sussex Newspaper is an all volunteer community newspaper so, as we don’t pay any salaries, you will want to know what you can get out of it.

We are the largest online newspaper in the county and have some of the brightest minds writing for us – including a couple of council leaders and senior lawyers.

To be a journalist on our books you only have to write one article a fortnight although we would naturally hope for a little more! We’re also looking for video contributors who may be interested in hosting their own online shows.

If you work for us for six months the editor would be prepared to give you a work and reliability reference.

Summary:

We are looking for a highly numerate and analytical reporter/analyst with excellent writing skills to help drive our Atlantic coal coverage and to take an active role with the construction of benchmark indices. The successful candidate will join a team of regional reporters and will be responsible for breaking news on physical deals, writing analyses and generating ideas for the team.

General Job Duties:

• Break news on physical deals and convey their relevance in the wider market.
• Report on market moving news.
• Analyse and report on demand and supply issues in the wider market and specific countries.
• Actively survey the industry on market prices and values on a daily basis.
• Maintain and expand contacts in the industry.

Required Education:

Bachelors degree.

Required Experience:

Relevant experience of business to business reporting on commodity or financial markets. Understanding/experience of European energy markets is desirable, though previous experience in coal industry journalism is not required.

Other Skills:

• An ability to manage the development of number of stories at any one time and a key eye for deadline is required.
• Write concisely and accurately as well as sub and proof others’ work.
• Manage and commission freelance reporters.
